Dongguk University is My Religion

Q1. Please introduce yourself.

   I am the 20th president of Dongguk University. I have a lot to do with number 20. I became the president 20 years after becoming a professor in 2003, so I prepared 20 pledges. In 2005, I worked as a professor in charge of the Dongguk University Press. I worked as a supervising professor and experienced adjusting to the difference in position between students and school. Therefore, I understand the importance of the media in school with trying to communicate.

Q2. How do you feel about becoming a new president of Dongguk University?

   As I entered Dongguk University in 1981, I stayed at our university for almost 40 years. As much as I prepared for the president, I am glad to be elected. However, on the other hand, I feel a heavy responsibility to operate Dongguk University well. Universities are conservative and difficult to change rapidly due to various constraints, while society is changing rapidly. Universities should change quickly as they are pushed back in a situation if they fail to adapt to changes in society, but structurally, they cannot change easily, so I think only mega-versities (meaning huge and well-organized universities) that provide good lectures and educational environments will survive. So I am not just so happy with the election of the president because I feel pressure to make Dongguk University survive well when this happens.

Q3. What was your motivation to candidacy for president of Dongguk University?

   When I was in high school, I got a Jang-won (meaning the best) award fromthe birthday 100th-anniversary writing contest of Manhae Han Yong-Woon, asenior of Dongguk University. With the incident, I entered Don gguk Universit y.For that reason, I went to Dongguk University with pride at least in t he field of literature. I loved Dongguk University and took pride in it, and to me, Dongguk University is more like a religion than my alma mater. That is how much I love Dongguk University. Therefore, I have always thought about how our students will feel proud and how Dongguk University will develop. It was not just a vague sense of loving our school, rather I was thinking about how to make it a place to learn and share various problems in the world realistically. Therefore, I think this time as president is an opportunity to apply these concerns.

Q4. The slogan “Higher, Further, Better” and your aim of becoming top five university among domestic universities, and top one hundred in the world are your vision. What are your main pledges to implement those?

   Actually, the word “Higher, Further, Better” is abstract. Since a standard is ambiguous, it has a vague meaning. This is not an of ficial slogan, but a temporary slogan during the presidential election. I and my secretary office are going to make an official slogan soon. And to solve this a mbiguity, I declared quantitative aims which are top five among domestic universities and top one hundred in the world. It means we are going to focus on both qualitative and quantitative aims.

   While making the history of Dongguk University clearer, it is necessary to expand its finances to actually make the university better realistically. However, to do that, we have to raise a lot of revenue outside of tuition. Ordering research funds is the most important, and there is independent revenue from lifelong education centers or internat ional language in stitutes, and development funds from networking by the president. The development funds of previous presidents are about 40 to 70 billion stations, which is about the top five among universities in Korea. The good networking of Buddhism allows such funds to be imported, and if Dongguk University operates well and shows excellent leadership, there are certainly many people who will donate to Dongguk University. The goal is to raise ne arly 100 billion won in development funds by preparing hard to catch these people. Also, raising university tuition and increasing the number of students is not easy for the government to manage. Therefore, it is necessary to increase out-of capacity admissions, and the government can consider ways to accept out-of- capacity admissions in a reas wit h support plans. Currently, about 2,800 new students are in the quota, and in order to increase the absolute budget, we must eventually increase the quota. I am planning to move to a large university with more than 3,000 students.

   Also, in terms of education, I think we should grasp the specificity that only Dongguk University can do as well as the universal education that every university can do. Since this will be health care, especially mental health, I will strengthen me ditation education. The goal is to strengthen the mind through meditation and provide various hands-on activities such as temple-stay in terms of physicality to foster students who can internalize their experiences and experiences, and to make Dongguk University students feel that they can overcome all kinds of difficulties.

Q5. Under the vision of the world’s university which is leading the future of human, you declared Dongguk University will give special education that any university has not tried so far. What is your specific plan for this? Especially, what do you think about strengths that only Dongguk University can do among many universities?

   Under a quote in Buddhism, “in the above, find the truth, and below, you should distribute that truth to other people,” I think it is important that Dongguk University’s education should clearly do the identity of him/herself. Regardless of what department students belong to, I hope that every Dongguk University student will have the mainphilosophy which is “I am the main character of the world.” Therefore, when I implement the subject of school’s constructive ideology I tried hard to put that mind in it. After being successful with the main character consciousness, I want to teach you how beautiful it is not to enjoy him/herself but to give to other people. As a word “A mirror does not laugh alone,” Dongguk University will educate students to share themselves first so that they have good persona lities to create a brand called “People who can share.”

Q6. One of your pledges is attracting national business projects and attracting private support business projects with contents such as digital Tripitaka project, promotional contents, and AI-based Chinese characters translation. What are good effects those activities can give to our university?

   The Buddhist business itself is a market of great value. However, I think thatthere are few people in this field, and this market is not being used well because they do not see the fut ure clearly in related fields. In order for Buddhism to emerge a new, it is a way to use government support, Dongguk University should prepare contents for it and serve as a base for producing Buddhist cultural contents. A case in point is the digital Tripitaka business. Although the “80,000 Tripitaka” exists in Korea, there are many people who do not know the contents it and do not understand the contents due to the Chinese characters. Therefore, the digital Tripitaka project is a project that translates it into an easy Korean so that many people can understand it and translates it back into a foreign langua ge and spreads it. This process will create a large demand for translation personnel, and Aritificial Intelligence (AI) technology can also be used here.

Q7. You have sustainably published “Dongguk’s light” that is explaining remarkable people related to Dongguk University. Why is important to establish Dongguk University’s identity clearly and what does it have a meaning for Donggukians?

   One cannot keep going forward. It is impor tant to look back on the past and find out what our ancestors were like. Dongguk University has a long history of 117 years, but students do not know much about the main figures. Therefore, we are publishing a series of “Dongguk’s light” to make students know and feel proud that there were great seniors and schoolrelated figures. I think this activity is important because that can inspire such self-esteem and can be a motivation for students to enter Dongguk University.

Q8. There are some voices of concern that your support of science and engineering students might be insufficient. These days, there is a word that the support of science and engineering is deciding university competitiveness. What is your plan to support science and engineering students?

   I know the fact well that the support of science and engineering is the main competitiveness of a university. Since I know Dongguk University’s supports for science and enginnering such as infrastructures are insufficient. I understand the concerns about it , but I can tell you clearly in this interview. As you know, Dongguk University began as a liberal arts-oriented university at first and the engineering college has begun in 1969, many people know Dongguk University as a liberal arts-oriented. However, as the era is changing fast, adjusting quickly and appropriately is most important, I am planning to support the science and engineering departments sufficiently. So, you do not have to concern about it at all.

Q9. Please tell us your future plan for communication with students or university members.

   As I have an experience about working as a supervising professor at Dongguk University media center, I know the importance of communicating with university members such as students, professors, and office staff. Therefore, I am planning to prepare a meeting chance to communicate with me. I will prepare Moring-Seven-Meating (MSM) time in my term, and anyone who wants to communicate with me can visit me. Because I am not a fan of formalities, please do not regard me as a hard and difficult person to talk with. I hope as many as possible people visit me and propose great ideas. If you come up with an idea having the main character consciousness such as “we are the best, we can be the center of the world,” I can ready to hear all your suggestions.
